Defining Your Hand TOO Much

Beginning players moving up are often desperate NOT to lose pots with big preflop hands. As such they tend to overraise AA, KK, QQ, AK.

Since you pretty much know what they have in these situations and they are generally willing to take it to the felt I will call their reraises with a fairly wide range - any pair, any decent suited connector but NOT any ace, king or queen since your domination risk is too high.

Here is a typical example from $5/10NL, 9-handed:

*** HOLE CARDS ***
MP raises $20 to $30
Fuel55 calls $30 from CO with [7s 7c]
SB raises $110 to $140 (overbet to isolate)
MP calls $110
Fuel55 calls $110
(set mining with deep stacks in a 3-way pot in which I have position)

*** FLOP *** [7d 6d Jd]
(not a pretty flop with 3 diamonds but I like that 7)
SB bets $199 (bet max chips to scare me off)
MP folds
Fuel55 calls $199
(take a card without raising to hopefully fade another diamond)

*** TURN *** [7d 6d Jd] [4c] (no diamond - at this point, I am going to the felt)
SB bets $500 (desperation bet –surely AA or KK with a diamond)
Fuel55 raises $500 to $1000
SB calls $388.30 and is all-in

*** RIVER *** [7d 6d Jd 4c] [Th]

*** SHOW DOWN ***
SB shows [Kc Ks] (a pair of Kings) (lose a 260BB pot with one pair and no diamond)
Fuel55 shows [7s 7c] (three of a kind, Sevens)
Fuel55 collected $2596.60 from pot

Pretty standard stuff.

I had a hand very similar to that not too long ago. UTG limped, I had QQ in the BB, I raised it up, he re-raised it up huge, so I put him on a big pair probably. I went ahead and smooth called knowing I could stack him if I hit. I flopped my set, check-raised him, he pushed, I doubled up. Always fun to do.

Just wondering why u think the 140$ is an overraise?

u have a raiser, and a caller in between, 140$ seems perfect in raise amount becuase it gives u terrible implied odds plus it could just as easily be a squeeze.

30 raise + 30 call = 60 raise to 140$ seems pretty standard, maybe 125-130 is better but 140 can't be bad. you just got lucky that he is willing to stack on such a shitty board.

I'm glad you put this post because I'm sure what you say carries more weight.

"Since you pretty much know what they have in these situations and they are generally willing to take it to the felt I will call their reraises with a fairly wide range - any pair, any decent suited connector but NOT any ace, king or queen since your domination risk is too high."

Exactly. All too often, I've heard people say "well, since he called the reraise, he must have TT or better" or something like that. I disagree. Reraising a big amount OOP is like flipping over your cards and showing your opponents that you have AA or KK. There's so much risk in getting stacked. Having said that, Fuel, I'd love to hear your comment regarding my post about folding aces (well, I didn't but I wanted to know what you thought about how the hand played out).
